Let's Talk About Hair Loss

HAIR LOSS IS COMMON. PERSONALIZED TREATMENT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE.

Are you noticing excessive hair in your brush, thinning around your temples, a widening part, a receding hairline, or reduced volume that doesn't seem to improve? If so, it may be time for a professional evaluation.

During National Hair Loss Awareness Month, we're helping raise awareness that hair loss affects millions of women and men of all ages. While it can be frustrating and emotional, the good news is that many forms of hair loss can be treated successfully when the underlying cause is identified early.

At SKN Dermatology, our board-certified dermatologists take a personalized approach, using advanced diagnostics and evidence-based treatments to help patients restore healthier, fuller-looking hair.

In this blog, we'll explore:

  • Meet Xtressé™ Hair Growth Gummies and Serum

  • The most common causes of hair loss

  • Types of hair loss

  • Treatment options, from vitamin supplements, to prescription therapies, and advanced in-office procedures

Hair loss doesn't have to be something you simply accept. With the right diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan, many patients can slow progression, improve hair density, and regain confidence. Let's take a closer look.

HAIR LOSS ISN'T ONE CONDITION

Hair thinning can result from many different factors and can be difficult to determine as there are often multiple factors contributing.

The most common causes include:

  • Genetics and family history

  • Hormonal changes

    • Including aging, menopause, and thyroid disorders.

  • Physical or mental stress on the body

    • Including childbirth, illness, surgery, and emotional stressors.

  • Nutritional deficiencies

    • Including iron, vitamin D, and zinc.

  • Medications

  • Autoimmune conditions affecting the scalp

Because every patient's story is different, and often there are multiple different causes contributing the the hair loss, treatment begins with understanding why hair loss is happening—not simply treating the symptoms.

TYPES OF HAIR LOSS

Telogen Effluvium

Sudden diffuse increase in hair shedding 2–3 months after a physical or psychological stressor. Telogen Effluvium is caused by premature transition of hair follicles from the growth phase into the resting phase which causes more than the usual number of hairs to start shedding.

Triggers:

  • Childbirth

  • Illness (COVID, or high fever)

  • Surgery

  • Major weight loss including GLP-1

  • Lab abnormalities including Iron or Vitamin D deficiency, and thyroid dysfunction

  • Medications

Prognosis & Treatment:

  • Often resolves without treatment in 6–12 months

  • Treat any underlying triggers or nutritional deficiencies

  • Treatment with vitamin supplements and topical or oral medications if prolonged

Androgenetic Alopecia

Gradual, localized, and progressive hair thinning over a span of years. Caused by androgen hormone sensitivity in a genetically predisposed person.

Male Pattern Hair Loss: Androgen hormones bind to receptors in hair follicles causing the follicles to miniaturize and have a shortened growth phase.

Features:

  • Receding hairline

  • Thinning on the top of the scalp

Female Pattern Hair Loss: Androgen sensitivity and progressive miniaturization of hair follicles, however it usually occurs later in life closer to menopause as estrogen levels decrease.

Features:

  • Thinning on the front and top of the scalp with preservation of the frontal hairline (no recession)

  • Widening of the part

Prognosis and Treatment:

  • Androgenetic Alopecia is progressive and needs treatment to stop worsening and increase regrowth.

  • Treatment with vitamin supplements, topical, and oral medications and PRP.

TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR HAIR LOSS

The earlier you start treatment, the more options you have. There is no single treatment that works for everyone. Our providers often combine multiple therapies to achieve the best results.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Scalp Injections

  • In-office procedure

  • 3 Step Process: blood draw, spin the blood to retrieve the PRP portion, and inject it into the scalp.

  • 3-4 treatments performed over 4-6 months.

  • Harnesses your body's own growth factors to stimulate dormant follicles to regrow.

  • PRP is an excellent option for many patients experiencing early to moderate hair thinning and can be combined with other therapies for enhanced results.

Vitamin Supplementation

  • Xtressé™, Nutrafol, or Viviscal Professional

  • Xtressé™ Hair Growth Gummies: We’re excited to introduce this new product to SKN Dermatology! Launched in 2024, Xtressé™ is a dermatologist-developed hair growth supplement featuring a blend of natural ingredients designed to help reduce hair stressors while supporting follicle health, healthy hair growth, and the strength of existing hair.

Prescription Treatments

  • Finasteride

    • Works by blocking the conversion of Testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp.

    • Prevents further hair thinning, so it is important to start when hair loss begins.

    • Prescription oral and topical formulations.

  • Minoxidil

    • Works by improving oxygen, nutrient, and growth factor delivery to the hair follicle.

    • Increases new hair growth.

    • Over-the-counter topical in 2.5% and 5% formulations.

    • Prescription topical in 7% and combined with Finasteride and other topicals medications  to increase effectiveness.

    • Prescription oral available with great results in regrowth of hair.
