Understanding and Treating Postpartum Acne
Postpartum Acne: What It Is and How to Treat It — Tips from Experts
Postpartum skin changes can be frustrating — and one of the most common concerns new moms face is acne after childbirth. In a recent Parents article, Dr. Samantha Ghiselli, MD, FAAD, shared insight into what causes postpartum acne and safe ways to approach treatment.
What Is Postpartum Acne?
Postpartum acne refers to new or worsening breakouts that may appear after pregnancy. It typically affects areas like the lower face, jawline, and neck — but can also appear on the chest and back. These breakouts are most often driven by hormonal fluctuations that occur after delivery.
Why It Happens
Sudden drops in estrogen and progesterone can lead to relatively stronger androgen levels, increasing oil production and inflammation.
Stress — which is common after childbirth — can elevate cortisol, further contributing to breakouts.
How Long It Lasts
The duration of postpartum acne varies among individuals. For most, it gradually improves as hormones stabilize — often within a few months of delivery. Breastfeeding can extend the timeline for recovery due to ongoing hormonal shifts.
Safe Treatment Options
Dr. Ghiselli highlights that many acne treatments are safe and effective postpartum, including:
Over-the-counter options like benzoyl peroxide and glycolic acid washes (avoid applying acids to the breast area if breastfeeding).
Prescription therapies for persistent or bothersome acne, under the guidance of a dermatologist.
When to Seek Help
If postpartum acne persists or significantly bothers you, consider seeing a board-certified dermatologist. Even though mild cases may resolve on their own, effective treatments are available and there’s no need to suffer through persistent breakouts.
